Biocontrol agents are important components in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) of potato insect pests, which include predators, parasitoids and entomopathogens. Among the predators, the most commonly observaed are - lady bird beetles and lace wing bugs feeding on aphids, white fly, leaf hoppers and mites. Carabid beetles or ground beetles are good predators of white grub, cut worm larvae, nymphs of mole cricket and field cricket. Spiders are generalist predators preying on aphids, white fly, leaf hoppers, epilachna beetles and mites. Predatory phytoseiid mites feed on aphids, scale insects (Coccids) and nematodes. Several insectivorous birds like- black drongo, house sparrow, cattle egrets, house crow, jungle crow, common myna, black myna, Indian robin and parrot play an important role in potato pest managemant as predators of insects like white grubs, cut worms, field cricket and mole cricket. In order to conserve the predator population, it is advisable to avoid insecticidal application as far as possible. If unavoidable, insecticides may be applied in the afternoon hours when predatory activity in the field is minimum . Periodic augmentative release of commercially available predator species may be done. In order to encourage bird predation, bird perches(bamboo tops, small branches of trees) may be erected in the field. Several important parasitoids naturally regulate populations of potato pests. Tachinid flies are important parasitoids of cut worms, white grubs etc. and Encarsia spp are important against white flies. Field releases of egg parasitoid Trichogramma chilonis and the egg-larval parasitoid Chelonus blackburni may be done against cut worm and potato tuber moth respectively. Unnecessary use of chemical pesticides should be avoided in order to conserve these parasitoids. Microbials like Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae, Verticillium lacanii, Bacillus thuringiensis, Heterorhabditis indica are effective against pests like white grubs, cut worm, mole cricket, field cricket, epilachna beetle etc. Biopesticides like mustard oil cake, neem seed kernel extract etc. are also effective against red ants, cut worms, termites and many other insects attacking potato crop.
